Protecting children online is a global challenge, which requires a global approach. While many efforts to improve child online protection are already under way, their reach has been more national than global. ITU has established the Child Online Protection initiative to create an international collaborative network and promote online safety of children around the world.

KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE: You can’t monitor your children every hour of the day. When you’re busy at work or home, you want to be sure that they’re safe from harm. But increasing numbers are viewing inappropriate material on the internet. 81% of children aged 14-16 have viewed adult material online; but how many parents have filters in place on their online material.

“The Internet is transforming the experience of growing up in Ghana. It is also transforming the job of being a parent in Ghana for that matter Africa. The Internet brings the world — the good, the bad, and the ugly — to the Ghanaian family’s doorstep. Established only a few decades ago, the Internet is a system of enormous technical and social complexity. It comprises a gigantic but almost invisible universe that includes thousands of networks, millions of computers, and billions of users across the world (Greenfield & Yan, 2006). Given that so many adolescents are spending so much time on the Internet, it is essential to be aware of its impact on their own behavior, well-being, and development as adolescents. It is also necessary they are empowered to be able to withstand majority of the dangers they may encounter outside the sight of adult.
